The National Institute of Standards and Technology is part of the United States Department of Commerce and focuses on Physical Science Laboratories. The NIST identifies its mission to “promote innovation and industrial competitiveness.”
The Department of Defense (DoD) requires compliance with NIST 80-171 for their acquisition process. The DoD exercises primary control over the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) and makes controlling unclassified information confidential. If doing work with GSA, NASA or other government agencies, compliance with NIST is crucial.
